The Hub of Art Laboratories (otherwise known as HAL), one of the most ambitious and innovative research programmes ever carried out by the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University, received its first major showcase at the Taboo – Transgression – Transcendence in Art & Science Interdisciplinary Conference, in Valletta, Malta, between 26 and 29 September 2023.

In keeping with one of the Conference’s key themes, HAL’s presence at TTT 2023 Malta was focused on the convergence between art, technology and science and how innovative, creative and beneficial that convergence can be. Through a series of talks, performances and installations, the members of HAL showcased the programme’s research on a wide range of cutting-edge fields, including: Gamification, VR technology and the metaverse, AI, Telematic arts, BioArt, Sound Art and sound technology.

Among the projects featured in the HAL ArtBox, which ran between 27 and 29 September, was an installation that introduced visitors and conferees to the metaverse version of the Ionian Islands Film Office. This virtual extension of the F.O.  was created in collaboration with HAL’s Gamification node, coordinated by Associate Professor Yannis Deliyiannis. Using the Spatial Platform, the VR Film Office is designed similarly to a physical space and offers private meetings for film and TV industry professionals, information about prospective locations, and details about past productions in the Ionian Islands. In addition, the platform caters to thematic visitors, tourists, and tourism professionals, providing location-based content for trip planning, booking sites, and connecting with local businesses. In doing so, it provides easy, worldwide access while at the same time promoting sustainability and supporting the local economy.

Drawing significant interest from TTT Malta 2023 attendees, the installation/presentation showcased the wide range of capabilities offered by the metaverse Ionian Islands Film Office, and once more validated the groundbreaking research conducted by HAL.
